I’ve played worse for more money., Sep 24, 2007
reviewer: Mike from Nashville TN
Played the course 9/22/07 and the greens putted just fine. First time the greens have putted true since they were rebuilt in 06. It’s located in a Working Class Neighborhood and Vince Gill was never mugged at Shelby, Vince doesn’t play course’s with $18 green fees. There was a problem about four years ago, but the boys responsible were caught and it hasn’t happened again. The course is fun and 80 years old. It is very unique; it does not play one hole up hill and the next down hill. It down and back up on the same 290 yr par 4. It’s very short but the greens are small and hard; and if you duff a shot and end up at the bottom of the hill (they’re small and steep) instead of the top on the other side, well you ain’t saving par. Course in not hard but it’s not easy, I shoot lower scores at 30% of the other public courses in town. It is not fancy, if that is what you’re looking for, stay away from municipal golf courses (you’ll be disappointed 95% of the time).

Home Course, Aug 30, 2005

I was a little upset about the bad reviews I read here but the truth sometimes hurts. I learned to play golf on this course some 30 yrs ago and I walked it what seems about a 1000 times in my younger days. In it's prime this was the course to play. With all the hills and blind tee shots and small greens you had to be a good golfer to score low on this course. It was a challenge. This course taught you Target golf. You had to hit it in the right place on the fairway to even get a chance to hold the ball on the small greens. This was one of the few course that had two sets of greens. One for winter play and one for summer. But that was then, now the course isn't in great shape.Mostly because Metro hasn't spent any money on up keep or improvemnts to the course. This course was built in 1924 and it hasn't changed much at all since then. If you want to test your iron play from up hill, down hill and side hill lies then this is the course for you. But if putting is your game then you should play somewhere else.

An awesome course for the green fee. Make sure you rent a cart unless you want a good workout.

Bad Course, Dec 28, 2004
reviewer: Logan from Nashville, TN USA
Shelby is a very bad course. It is a bad layout, with bad conditions, in a bad part of town (It's actually being "revemped", but that is irrelevant). The course is monotonous with wide fairways, tiny greens, and HILLS. It has a lot of HILLS. Did I mention HILLS? Many of the greens are "unputtable" because of sand and holes (besides the one white one). The course is also in a bad part of town. A couple of years ago, country music singer Vince Gill was mugged while playing Shelby. The only good thin about this course is the price. It is cheap. Well, you get less than you pay for. I would not recommend this course to anyone.

Course was ok, but we heard that several golfers had been mugged there in the past. It is not in the best part of Nashville.

Greens, greens, greens..., May 27, 2004

Fun course. I enjoyed the elevation changes and the placement of the greens. However, the greens were very unreliable and in places there was enough sand on the greens to build a small castle. But hey, what do you expect for 18 dollars?

Very Hilly, Apr 01, 2004
reviewer: Chris Oaks from Chattanooga, TN, USA
This truly is a hilly course and challenging. The rolling hills can make it hard to judge the distance of your shot. It may actually be longer than it looks. The fairways are wide and playable, but once again HILLY. There is a par 3 over water that almost completely surrounds the green. If you don't make the green in 1 then you may end up with a BOGEY. The back nine can have narrow fairways at times and runs through trees and near houses and roads. SO BE CAREFUL. It is a well kept course. Also with the hills the wind can be a factor. The hardest part of the course was finding it. Make sure you call for directions.
