Can't miss, Jul 03, 2004

Currently (7/1/04) they are having a special. Play after 1 for $19 and that includes the cart. It's a short course with plenty of doglegs. I don't recall a shot over water, but plenty of water along the sides of the fairway. The greens were in great shape. You won't pull the big dog out on every par and you'll have to play some "target golf" but it is worth it. Friendly staff. The course was recently re-done. Tiger himself was there on openning day and did a thing for "First Tee" So you can play were Tiger played, its not often one can say that. Oh, if I'm looking to play I'll play here before any of the muni's in Va Beach. The course is in better shape and the price is $10-15 cheaper. Plus I get to ride vs walk, but this is short enough that you can walk without undo stress and strain.

Since the late 80s when I first played this course, it has improved tremendously. Just enough water to bring out the dew on your forehead and just enough interest to make you pay attention to each shot. I really enjoyed the course. NOTE: It was nice to have a snack cart roam the course so you can have a bite or a drink while playing.

Sleepy Hollow Golf & Country Club
"Laid Back Golf"
Sleepy Hollow is a very good layout that suffers mainly from a lack of year round irrigation. The tees suck but the greens and fairways are usually in good shape. This is no frills golfing at its best. No tee times required. Just show up and play. There is no clubhouse to speak of, the carts don't always work, and you will encounter 5-somes and 6-somes (but don't worry; they play faster than most 4-somes). Why play there? Because the layout is demanding, you can meet some really interesting people, and it is cheap. All the golf you can play for around $20 if you walk, but you better be in pretty good shape if you plan on walking. Don't bother going if you are looking for a country club experience. This is a club that is out in the country and has that laid back attitude to go with it.

Foxfire at Village Green
"FGC Social Club Chairman"
Every year we head down from Ottawa and Toronto to Syracuse for the FGC Spring Open, which is now in it 15th year. Because of where the course is situated, it is protected from the winter lake effect, meaning Foxfire is usually open three to four weeks ahead of our own courses and is always in excellent condition thanks to its great drainage. The generous fairways and large greens make it an excellent course for mid to high handicappers, especially at the beginning of the season. In no way, however, does that mean this course is a walk. The second hole, with trees lining both sides of the fairway and slight dogleg left, can easily put you back into the hole after the easy opener. A tricky little Par 3 follows and then rolls in to an uphill dogleg Par 4. Fail to play those three holes well and your round can get off to a very shaky start. Even more challenging are the 13th, 14th and 15th, two Par 4s and a Par 5 that will either make or break your round. For our group, each hole on this course holds a personal history that makes it that much more pleasant to play. While the four-star rating I've given might seem a bit high, there are few courses any of us have played -- public or private -- that we enjoy as much as Foxfire. Throw into the mix the unbeatable spring prices (two rounds, cart and lunch with a beer for under $50 Canadian) and the wonderful staff and you'll understand why we keep coming back for more every year.
