short but not as easy as it looks, May 18, 2004

This course is short, and they havent got the irrigation system in yet, so by summer, its reduced to hard pan. Irrigation is coming though and a pond has been introduced to the left of one of the par threes to feed the system. Its a bump and run type of course because the greens are small, slope some, and generally dont hold a ball that hits them. The bunkers are in good shape. The course is somewhat open, with an easy to handle rough. There are a few nice bends that you have to work your ball around, and the potential for uphill or downhill lies exist for most every hole. If you're a really long hitter you will clean up on this course, especially if you can draw the driver. For average hitters, you better have your chipping game together. One more note, for an inexpensive course thats relatively easy to get out on, you wont find better views anywhere in the country. Breathtaking.

"Best Kept Secret In Central VA"
Of all the courses I have played through out VA I would have to say this is one of the best kept secrets in Virginia. The greens are very fast but yet they hold very well. The vista's of the mountains on the back nine are breath taking. The #17 hole could one day be as comparable to one of the holes at Augusta or the TPC Sawgrass. Its and old club with alot of history set up in a beautiful historic town! If you can get your self and invitation to play it I would highly recommend it. Keep your head down and let it rip. Bill P.

"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. The course can frustrate you if you expect too much too easily. This is what makes it such a wonderful place to experience the brilliance of Donald Ross. "One of the best Par-3's I have played on."
This place is great, I am a mid-handicapper, and a couple of my buddies and I decided to play a par-3 for fun, and we were lucky to find this place. For one they are open all day, they aren't to expensive, and they take care of their par-3 like it was a course on the tour. Definitely recommend.
