This club, which has been established as a National Historic Landmark, is famous for hosting many national championships, including the National Amateur, the PGA Championship, and seven U.S. Opens. Oakmont gained additional notoriety for its "furrowed" bunkers during the 1973 U.S. Open. Johnny Miller established the U.S. Open eighteen hole record with a 63 in the final round in 1973, regarded by some as the finest round of golf ever played. Hole #1 was voted the tour's most difficult hole by PGA of America. "Golf Digest" rated this course 7th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for the years 1995 through 1998. It was also rated as the 2nd "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and #1 for 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" awarded it 9th in the category of the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 1997 and 1999, and "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 10th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997 and 1998, and 12th in 1999. A program to clear out trees was completed in 1999 with the eviction of a couple of hundred hardwoods in order to restore a grand old design to the open-spaced terrain that existed when the course was built in 1903. Even though carts are available, the club personnel would prefer you to walk the course. The 5,945-yard ladies' tee also has a men's course rating of 70.7 and a slope of 134.

| I had the fortune to play Oakmont as part of a corporate outing and it was the most amazing golf day of my life. the course is crazy hard - deep bunkers, long par 3's and lightning fast greens. The history of the course and clubhouse, the amenities and the staff were amazing. If anyone gets any opportunity to play this course,do it!! Beg, steal, borrow - do whatever you need to get on this track and other courses will pale in comparison! |
