This resort, which was formerly known as the Pointe Hilton South Mountain Golf Club, completed a three-year $1-million enhancement project in 1998. These changes include the expansion of the landing areas and enhanced playability of the course. On some holes, tee boxes were moved back and bunkers were added to increase yardage and excitement in the layout. The front nine still has water coming into play on four holes, while the back nine is a desert-target course with wider fairways than in the past. The greens are medium speed and protected by only a few sand bunkers. The signature hole is #13, a 538-yard, par 5, requiring an approach shot to an elevated green protected by deep bunkers. You can make the green in two shots, but if you are short on the second shot, you will pay the price.

| Played this course as part of a company outing on Saturday. The fairways were covered in dead grass, but the course was to be closed on Monday for a month of overseeding, so I will cut some slack on that. The greens were in good shape, however, albeit a little fast. The front nine is resort style. My only complaint was the fact that it winds through a housing development and sometimes the journey to the next tee box was a little long. The back nine is desert style and very scenic. None of the holes are exceptionally difficult, but none of them are easy, either. Many of the holes have doglegs and the straight ones have well-placed bunkers or difficult pin placements. There is a driving range and practice green, but while they are adequate, the layout says "resort focus" not "golf focus".
Overall, this is a good course, that would be even better once winter grass is in. It is not a bargain (it *is* a resort) but if you are looking for a pleasant experience and resort golf is in your price range, a visit to Phantom Horse is worthwhile. |

| I just recently visited Pointe South Mountain Resort were the Phantom Horse golf club is located and the only word i can say is wow! this course was in wonderful condition. although i am only 15 i shot a 45 on the front. it was difficult but very fun. you have to use every shot you know and then some. the back nine is the full of the most beutiful sights i have ever seen. the 17th looks over the whole landscape of the area. you see the camel backs, downtown phoenix and all of the mountains. A GREAT COURSE! IT'S WORTH THE PRICE! |
