Eastmoreland Golf Course

This course was built on very hilly terrain with tight, out-of-bounds areas guarding the right side on several holes. The fairly narrow fairways are lined with trees that will severely penalize wayward drives. The front nine is much easier with no water, while back nine is very difficult with considerable water, including two par 3's requiring long carries over water. The 1990 National Public Links Tournament was held at this course. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 9th "Best Public Course" in the state and also 37th best out of "America's Top 75 Affordable Courses" from their list of "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play" for 1996. The same publication rated it 6th among the "Top 75 Public Courses" for 1990, and ranked it as the 13th "Best in State" course for 1997-98.

The original review of this course appears very accurate. However, I don't consider Eastmoreland to be a "hilly" course. There is a fairly aggressively elevated tee box on the front nine, but other than that a very moderate roll or flat to the rest of the terrain. Thought I'd weigh in... RR

i played the course 7/2/05 and found the course to be a very fun course to play. the greens were in excellent shape, having recovered from earlier conditions. tight fairways and tough par 3's. one had to hit it very straight. the staff was excellent and one can't beat the green fees. it did play slow.we teed off at 8:30 and it took us 5+ hours to play. if you could get the locals to repair the divots/or use seed it greatly help the fairways. hope to play it again!!

course needs work in a big way, Apr 28, 2005

Eastmoreland is a great layout in really bad condition. It's an old parkland style golf course with lots of beautiful mature trees. You can gain a lot of advantages with working the ball off the tee. The problem with the course is that it has had some very serious greenkeeping problems. Last year the greens died (Fungus I think) and they are still recovering as of April 2005). The speed of the greens is slow and there are still a few spots where they have not grown back. The other serious problems is that the drainage is really poor in the winter. After a heavy rainstorm there are drainage problems serious enough that walking the course can be uncomfortable because you are sinking into deep mud. To summarize, the course could be good with the proper work, but it's not kept well enough to recommend. Go if you don't mind playing in poor conditions and want to look at a course with lots of potential.

Not bad. Not good. The positives are that it is challenging, but inviting to most levels. Front always plays slow, several long, uneventful fairways, and mediocre drainage. Some nice greens and great approaches. Long, straight front 9. Water, more variety on back 9.
