A Forgiving Bargain, Jul 10, 2006
reviewer: Mark Early from Roanoke, VA
Ole Monterrey Golf Course is a pleasantly forgiving course nestled in Roanoke City alongside another golf course. On the Sunday in July 2006 when I played, the course was in very good shape. Closely cut fairways, rough that was thick enough to avoid, but not so thick that you were left with little chance of rescuing an errant drive or approach. The greens were in very good shape. They held their lines very well, not glassy fast or soddenly slow. While this course has a wealth of rolling hills and only one water hazard, it is not as pretty as other courses around. Wide open and not overly long, this is a great course for players new to the game, as I am. A few minor changes would make the course a more pleasant place to play. I had to ask a staff member how to get from the tenth green to the 11th tee. (You have to drive to the far end of the parking lot and follow a dirt path around a hill.) A few more trees to break up the view and the access from fairway to fairway would also be helpful. At one point, you can easily see across three different fairways. A particularly nasty slice could have you interfering with at least two other groups. All in all, for the $35 for an early afternoon round, I have no strong complaints. Definitely a good round, but not a great one.
