This course sucks..., Jul 09, 2004

Nice wide fairways, but the abundance of goose feces and unkept greens and fairways detracted from my experience. Also the "caliber" of people that utilize this course is pretty questionable (i.e. loud cursing, no dress codes, etc.). I will never golf here again. I will stick to Malaga Three Lakes course and Desert Canyon.

Carolina Golf & Country Club
"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. The greens are well kept and very fast at times. Many are sloped and undulated which makes putting difficult at times. The course is pretty open but has a nice layout.

Highlands Ridge
"Hidden Gem"
Played South @ North Courses. South is short but challenging. Very enjoyable. Lots of character. Great condition. Flowers everywhere. North Course is a newly opened(2003) exceptional layout. Both courses are well worth the trip. You won't be disappointed.

Sharp Park Golf Course
"Great Value ."
Sharp Park is a city owned course. Extremly reasonable rates. Twilight rate in the summer is about $5.00!!! What a value. It's an older course, fairly flat, easily walked, although carts are available. Several years ago the course was redesigned. Several holes were lengthened, a beautiful pond was added. It only comes into play on one hole and only on the mens tees. Due to the reasonable rates, the course has players of all skill levels.
