La Cantera Golf Club16401 La Cantera PkwySan Antonio, TX 78256 Phone: (800)446-5387Fax: (210)558-1529 This regulation eighteen hole course is part of a 1600-acre master development, which included a 24,000-foot clubhouse and a hotel built adjacent to the course in 1999, to be operated by Westin Hotels & Resorts. The course's design includes natural water hazards, such as swift running streams and waterfalls, which come into play on several holes. Six holes offer panoramic views of the San Antonio area. Several oak trees line the fairways, and the greens are large, fast, and undulating. Seventy white-sand bunkers are spread throughout the course's design. This course has two signature holes. The first is #7, a 316-yard, par 4, which is a breathtakingly beautiful quarry hole called "The Rattler," and featuring a unique rattlesnake-shaped sand bunker on the left side of the fairway, along with several other fairway bunkers you'll need to avoid. Your tee shot is from a cliff eighty-feet above the fairway. In the background there is a great view of the roller coaster at Six Flags and many of the other amusement park rides. The second signature hole is #12, a 415-yard, par 4, in which the fairway is protected by "church pew bunkers" on the left, and the green is guarded by a natural waterfall and creek. The green sits back and to the left requiring a longer approach shot when the flagstick is on the left side of the green. Without a long tee shot, this is a definite "lay-up hole." The course offers a variety of other holes, including each of the par 3's playing to a different yardage and direction, all requiring a variety of club selections. Also, each of the par 5's play in a different direction, so you can expect to play in a variety of wind conditions, see varying scenic views, and experience playing an assortment of different strategies. This club hosted the La Cantera Texas Open PGA Tour Event for 1995 and will continue to be the host through the year 1999. "GOLF Magazine" even selected it to their 1998 list of "Top 10 PGA Courses You Can Play." There is a golf academy on site which has innovative teaching equipment, a fifteen-acre double-ended practice range, along with practice putting greens and sand bunkers. The club is located adjacent to the Fiesta Texas Theme Park in San Antonio. Private and group lessons are available from the PGA professionals who are part of the La Cantera staff. "Golf Digest" rated this as the "Best New Public Course" in America for 1995. In addition, "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 2nd "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996, and 17th among the "Top 75 Upscale Courses" for 1996. They also rated it as the 5th "Best in State" course for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" ranked it 58th best under the 1998 category of the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S."
