This beautiful, Scottish links-style course is truly one of the most unique golf experiences in Texas. The front nine plays through open fields and alongside several flowing creeks and streams. Water hazards come into play on six of the challenging front nine holes, requiring a variety of shotmaking skills. The back nine is situated entirely in a huge, abandoned rock quarry that features sheer walls rising almost 100 feet on three of the four sides. The course features several signature holes; the most exciting of which are holes #13, "Escape from Alcatraz," and #17, "Reload." Hole #13, a 362-yard, par 4, features a dogleg left fairway highlighted by a beautiful quarry lake along its left side. Hole #17, a 386-yard, par 4, requires a heart-racing tee shot across a deep canyon chasm to a generous landing area in the fairway. If you don't make it, "Reload." This hole was voted among "The Best 18 Holes You Can Play" by "Golf Digest" in 1997. "Golf Digest" also rated this course as the 5th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. Other awards from "Golf Digest'' include a 28th ranking in their category of the "Top 75 Upscale Courses" for 1996, and 32nd among the "Top 75 Affordable Courses" for the same year. They rated it as the 4th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 7th best for 1997-98. The clubhouse showcases an unparalleled view of the entire back nine and features a full-service restaurant with tournament pavilion and banquet catering capabilities; this is a great place to hold a conference or convention event.

Tough Course, Jul 10, 2005
reviewer: R. Rose from Conroe, Texas
This course is a bit pricy and difficult for the mid to high handicap golfer. I hit a couple of 300 yard drives....200 yards in the air then 100 yards to the bottom of a canyon. The pro shop staff were a bit "stiff" for me but the marshals that I met were down to earth and would talk to you. Carry a bunch of balls with you when you play. If the gorges don't get them the tall rough will because you really don't want to be thrashing around in there with the rattlesnakes. Next time I am in San Antonio I will probably play Pecan Valley or one of the less pricy couses.
