This par 3 course is great for practicing your short game. There are no water hazards or sand bunkers. The fairways are wide open, and the greens are slow and medium-sized. Besides the driving range, there is a practice sand bunker, three chipping greens, and a putting green. The longest hole on this course is #6, measuring 175 yards.

Best Beginner Course, Feb 22, 2004

This is the best beginner golf course around!Highlights for the beginner is no sand or water, and lights allow play until 2200. Price is $10 or less for 18 holes; you would be hard pressed to find a course to practice your short irons as well as pitching and chipping. You could play everyday for a couple weeks with this low price! The shop has very good prices with no tax.

St. Clair Shores Country Club
"Great Shape - Slow Play"
I've been playing St. Clair Shores Country Club since 1983. Over the years the quality of the course, ie: fairways, greens and overall layout of the course had improved greatly. It's a fine course to play for all levels. The better golfer may find it a bit short. Most par 4's are in the low to mid 300's. The course is mainly flat, but offers many different obsticles. Plenty of sand makes up for the flat layout. Water also poses problems on several holes. Hole #14, a mid range par three, requires a full carry over water. The main problem with St. Clair Shores Country Club is the SLOW PLAY. The course rangers, while very nice, do not do their job properly. In fact, over the past 20 years, they've gotten progresively worse. So don't expect any help if your stuck behind a group that take's more time than normal. Remeber, it's not a race. At least that's what I tell myself each time I go out to St. Clair Shores Country Club. Needless to say, it gets a bit frustrating at times. In conclusion, the course is maintained quite well. If you can get out on a weekday morning that would be the best time to enjoy your round. The rates are about mid $40's for 18 holes and a cart.

Stevens Park Golf Course
"Classic Muny"
Stevens is only a few minutes from downtown. It's in a beautiful area and has some scenic views of Dallas. It's a classic muny and a good course to walk. There are many challenging holes and there are some very easy holes. Number 2 is a very short par 4 and is reachable from all of the tees. Number 12 is a short par 5 dog leg that is reachable in 2 but there are many well placed trees and an elevated green with a mean slope and you'll be happy if you get your 5. There are a few holes where you can hit your drive as far as you can but most take some strategy off the tee. On 17 you can hit 220 yards straight away or 140 yards to the right side of the fairway and both will leave an open short iron shot to the green... if you avoid two beautiful oaks and a wide creek on that tee shot. The par 3's are gorgeous and the two on the back are included in the 3 hardest on the back nine handicap chart. Stevens Park is a favorite, great taquitos in the snack bar too.

"what about the greens"
What makes river forest a difficult course is their greens.They can put the pin placements where it is possible to three and four putt greens even if you play it everyday.Slopping greens make every putt a challenge. They also have added a water hazard to #3 making it impossible to reach in 2.With the addition of new tee boxes and several holes with where you can knock it OB good luck for all you 10 handicappers to try and break 90 on you first couple rounds.
