A Top 10 Public Course in Metro Syracuse & CNY, Aug 09, 2005

The Elms Golf Club is one of the finest public, 18-hole courses you'll find in metro Syracuse and Central New York. Play this course from the tips and you'll be challenged by its many changes in elevation, doglegs, water hazards and wooded surroundings. My favorite hole on the front was #8, a dogleg left par 4 with a drive over a creek with a tree-lined fairway down the entire left side that block any approach shot that isn't far enough or straight enough to clear the corner. My favorite hole on the back nine was #13, a dogleg right, par 4 wherein the approach shot is over a small ravine...no running the ball up onto this green. Another challenging hole on the back was #17--the club's signature hole. With the exception of the distance between holes 12-13 and 17-18, the course is easily walkable and enjoyable. Play is at a nice pace. The Pro, Scott Hilton, is very likable and accommodating to locals, groups and out-of-towners.

Pines Municipal Golf Course, The
"Tough for it's size"
I'm origianally from Toccoa and have played this golf course many many times. While only a 9 hole course, it is worth the money to play it. It is far less expensive than most golf corses and offers real challenges for even experienced golfers. The terrain is extremely hilly and almost every hole has an extreme change in elavation. The green's are extremely small and very very fast. During the summer the fairways and greens are fairly well manicured although winter play tends to be a little harder on some holes due to a harder fairways from less moisture. Fairways are extemely tight with hundreds of opportunities to lose balls in pine forests and a courseside lake on the last two holes. Overall, not an allstar course but for a quick, challenging, and inexpensive round well worth the time.

St. Clair Shores Country Club
"Great Shape - Slow Play"
I've been playing St. Clair Shores Country Club since 1983. Over the years the quality of the course, ie: fairways, greens and overall layout of the course had improved greatly. It's a fine course to play for all levels. The better golfer may find it a bit short. Most par 4's are in the low to mid 300's. The course is mainly flat, but offers many different obsticles. Plenty of sand makes up for the flat layout. Water also poses problems on several holes. Hole #14, a mid range par three, requires a full carry over water. The main problem with St. Clair Shores Country Club is the SLOW PLAY. The course rangers, while very nice, do not do their job properly. In fact, over the past 20 years, they've gotten progresively worse. So don't expect any help if your stuck behind a group that take's more time than normal. Remeber, it's not a race. At least that's what I tell myself each time I go out to St. Clair Shores Country Club. Needless to say, it gets a bit frustrating at times. In conclusion, the course is maintained quite well. If you can get out on a weekday morning that would be the best time to enjoy your round. The rates are about mid $40's for 18 holes and a cart.

VERY NICE COURSE FOR THE $$.THE GREENS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.SOME FAIRWAYS ARE TIGHT AND TREE LINED.THE COURSE IS MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE RATING OF 113(MORE LIKE A 125 TO 127 FROM THE BACK TEES).IT CAN USE A FEW MORE SAND TRAPS,BUT THERE ARE ENOUGH TREES AND WATER TO KEEP YOU HONEST.

Philmont Country Club - North Course
"Great old classic"
Classic course. Elevation changes make the course play longer than the yardage. Fast smooth greens can be treacherous. A nice variety of shots is required.
