Challlenging Doesn't Have To Be Long, Nov 05, 2004

This is a great value with lots of variety. It plays back-and-forth across part of the Santa Ana River Channel. Several tee shots are from elevated tee boxes down into the channel and back up to elevated greens. A premium is put on landing the ball in strategic areas and not trying to overpower the course (you'll usually lose). With skyrocketing green fees, this is a great value and not always crowded.

This plays along the Santa Ana River Bed so half of the time you're either hitting off an elevated tee or up to a green. It's one of the easiest courses to get a tee time for in the area. Walking is NOT recommended for the physically challenged. Course management is required, so, if you can master the subtleties of where to land your ball on this course, you can play anywhere. A very good value for an Orange County course. Includes an 18-hole putting practice green.

"HARD TO GET ON - GREAT TO PLAY"
Course is a traditional style designed by Gene Hamm and renovated by John LaFoy in 1999. This is the only private course in Chapel Hill. Walking is encouraged and it is a great way to experience the course. Signature hole IS NOT # 14. It's # 10 which can require carry over water twice. Pin on this hole makes 3 to 4 clubs difference on second shot. It's a beauty! Only one hole without bunkers - the par 3 9th is about 175 uphill from middle tees. Out of bounds on many of the holes as the fairways rise and fall through a very established traditional and exclusive neighborhood. Greens are all large (with at least 6 different zones on each one for pin placement)and have many contours. Three putts are common - especially in spring and fall when the bent grass surface is kept very fast. Bring your thinking cap, but also bring your game if your fun comes from scoring well. It's not an easy course, but it's not Jack Nicklaus difficult either.

"1 goofy hole"
I like this golf course, but 1 hole make it less than stellar. Number 12 is a ridiculous 90 degree dogleg that takes away from the rest of the course. Speed of play has been exceptional every time I have played, but that 1 idiotic hole ruins ithe backside. I suggest moving up the box and making it a par 3 or redoing it altogether.
