Quail Brook Golf Course

625 New Brunswick Rd
Somerset, NJ 08873
Phone: (732)560-9528

This hilly course features water hazards coming into play on four holes and sand bunkers in play on every hole. The signature hole is #17, a 474-yard, par 4, requiring a straight tee shot to an extremely narrow and hilly landing area in the fairway. Unfortunately, senior discounts are available for New Jersey state residents only.

Beautiful and challenging, Jul 16, 2007
reviewer: Russell from Jersey City, NJ
I played this course for my first time yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. For the middle of summer, the course is in excellent condition, though a little rain would really help. When you think of a public golf course, you usually think it won't be too challenging so it can be easily enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels. When it comes to Quailbrook, think again. The "easily enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels is true," but this course definitely offers a true test to even the most accomplished and experienced golfers. One of the first major challenges you'll notice are the bunkers -- they're on every hole. There are quite a few greens (especially on the par 3s) that are front-protected by bunkers and even more holes that require tough flop shots over greenside bunkers. The greens are rolling and the staff does an excellent job with challening pin placements. There is a significant risk/reward element to this course, and quite a few holes reinforce the notion that drivers are for professional use only. You will need a full bag for this course as holes of widely varying length will test your shot-making skills. A couple of holes are open and somewhat lush, but for the most part expect narrow fairways that require you to think about your club selection as shotmaking far outweighs the "grip it and rip it" theory. The only annoying thing was a threesome of marginal-at-best golfers who insisted on playing from the professional tees, only to repeatedly hit into the woods. My girlfriend played her first-ever 18 holes and the course really made her feel comfortable; whereas more experienced golfers will appreciate the intricacies of the course. Play during twilight and you can move relatively quickly. It was $82 for two of us with a cart -- and well worth it.

Best Layout in Somerset County, Sep 07, 2005
reviewer: Richard Varall from Hillsborough, NJ
Quail Brook offers a great variety of challenges either from the blue or white tees. The par fours mix long lengths and short lengths. The average golfer can expect to have a few birdie chances on both nines and he can also feel fortunate to walk off some of the par four greens with bogey. The expert golfer will have to consider risk/reward when selecting a club to use on many of the tees. From the white tees, the par 5's are not too long but have trouble on both the right and left. The par 5's are very challenging for expert golfers from the blue tees and can't be considered birdie holes. The par 3's are a test as well, especially #4 from the blue tee. A wide but shallow green that is well bunkered makes club selection critical. Errant tee shots on any of these holes will make par extremely difficult. Generally the greens present unique challenges with very few straight putts from distances outside ten feet. Sand comes into play in front of the greens on all of the par 3's. There are a few weak holes such as #9, a short and straight par 4 without much distinction and # 15, a short par 3 that is a somewhat blind shot. But those weak holes are more than made up for by the challenges presented by #1 and #4 on the front nine and #17 and #18 on the back. On #17 and #18 (both long par 4's that could be found on top courses anywhere), long and accurate tee shots are required since short balls will leave most golfers with much more than 200 yards left to the green. And there are no bail out areas off these tee shots with woods and OB on both the right and left. Quail Brook is a golf course that challenges golfers at any skill level and its layout is certainly the most imaginative of all the Somerset County courses. When the greens and fairways are in good condition, this course is a gem and a bargain at county greens fee rates.

Ride the back!, Nov 16, 2004
reviewer: rcmjetmar from Kendall Park, NJ
I walk most of the time, but the back nine...yowza..you need a cart. The course provides a variety of looks and approaches for the course manager to the gambler. You can come in a use a 3-wood on 9 to 12 tees or a driver for higher rewards. The greens are equalizers. Some small, some with breaks you do not see. The fairways are nicely kept throughout the year, and the greens are, I think, the best of the county courses (N.B. I have not played Neshanic as yet). The staff is very nice. Nice challenging course for the serious, "but can only get out in the week-end" duffer. For Somerset residents, it's a steal at the price, and not so bad for the non-residents.
