This course, which opened August 1, 1997, features wide fairways, some lined with trees. The terrain is flat, but you may find a few uneven lies. Water hazards come into play on fourteen holes. The greens are small, sloped and fairly slow. The signature hole is #12, a 543-yard, par 5, which plays to a straight fairway, but the green is protected by a creek in front, two bunkers on the right and one bunker on the left. The green is also sloped from the back to the front.

Highly Overrated, Dec 20, 2005

| I live near the South Riding course and played it 4 times in 2005 as part of a "Player's Pass" that included Pleasant Valley GC. I agree with other reviewer's comments on the club house - it is very run down and the service is poor at best. The practice facilities are not very good and they must be having money problems because they give you one little bag of balls for the range, they used to have unlimited range balls. The practice bunker looks like a dried up mud puddle. There are two reasons I will never play this course again. The greens are horrible. They are literally chewed up from over use, water damage and ball marks left by the members who feel that they are above stooping down to fix a ball mark. The second reason is the extremely slow pace of play. If you like getting to know the group in front and the group behind - play South Riding - you'll be seeing them all day long! If you are looking for a great course in this area, play at Pleasant Valley. The course is in great shape tee to green, the practie facility is fine (unlimited range balls) and the service is 100% better than SR. |

Good test with a couple of gimmicks, Jul 22, 2004

| I'm a 12 handicaper that plays this course fairly regularly. With all the rain last year, the course kind of got away from the staff and it suffered from way too much water. This year, the course is in excellent shape, especially the greens. They are running fast and true.
The layout is full of great risk/reward tee shots and a couple of reachable par 5's including the first hole. The layout of the greens are the best feature of this course, they are well contoured and shaped to provide challenging angles for approach shots. There are no blind tee shots anywhere on the course. Playing from the tips will require a player to hit driver about twice as often as what is necessary from the medal tees.
3 things stop me from giving this course 4 or 5 stars. First, there are two holes that are too gimmicky for my tastes. #4 is a short par 4 with a hazard and a very tall tree smack in the middle of the fairway about 230 off the tee and #17 is a 280 yard par 4 that is a 90 degree dogleg left. Both holes offer really no opportunity for a risk/reward decision which is what you want in short par 4's. You have to lay up on both.
Second, the community is really filling in and lining most holes with single-family houses or townhomes. I used to play there before the houses came and it was nice to look at, now it looks cluttered and almost urban.
Finally, the clubhouse facilities are underwhelming (although the practice facilities are adequate) and the staff can be prickly.
So if I could divide my review I would give course layout and playability 4.25 stars and atmosphere and facilities 2.75 stars. |
