This well-maintained course features many difficult holes which are hard to reach in regulation. There are many trees and a pond incorporated into the course's design. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the #1 "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. The signature hole is #18, a 403-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot up a dogleg left fairway with a water hazard situated on the inside corner, then an approach shot that must carry a quarry in order to safely reach the green.

Tough, challenging and a lof of fun, Jan 13, 2009
reviewer: bogeyman from Chicago, IL
We played this course the morning after a steady rain and found it to be well-maintained but a real buttkick if you wander of the fairway. The rough is as it should be and the greens fast and tricky. The #18 was particularly spirit-killing, but a fitting end to a well-designed and challenging course. Nice folks at the clubhouse were an added bonus.

Hidden Treasure in Northwest Iowa., Jul 28, 2004
reviewer: John U. from Ankeny, Iowa
I have played the Northwest Am. on this course from 1992 through 2002. One of the best courses I have played in or out of state. Public or private. Very well manacured with true, quick bent greens. Tight Bluegrass fairways. Holes 5, 13 and 17 are 200 yd plus par 3's with the 13th green being one of the most difficult on the course and can play 238 yds from the tip. This course WILL allow you to score. If you ever have a chance to play this while at Lake Okoboji, the 45 minute drive is well worth it.

Best in Northwest Iowa, Mar 08, 2004
reviewer: D. Swanson from Twin Cities
Spencer Golf & Country Club is always in great shape, and is a great place for novice and experienced players. Spencer is more enjoyable than any of the courses around Lake Okoboji and more affordable. It's worth going out of your way for!
