This narrow course has tree-lined fairways, so shot accuracy is at a premium. Some of the undulating greens are multi-tiered, and some are elevated, but all of them are well bunkered. Water hazards (two ponds and a creek) come into play on three holes. The signature hole is #11, a 430-yard, par 4, requiring an extremely difficult approach shot over water to an undulating green. This course doesn't open until 11 AM on Monday.

| Walter Travis was at his best in his layout of the Stafford CC course. In his routing of the layout, he made maximum use of the rolling terrain. The course sustains the interest of golfers at all skill levels. The small greens are a challenge to hit in regulation, with the original Travis greens requiring a high degree of accuracy and a keen eye for the subtle, and not so subtle breaks. Many of the original Travis bunkers have been restored, increasing the demand for accuracy from the tee as well as shots to the green. Travis once said, "My courses always look easier than they are." Stafford has lulled many golfers into that initial perception. One never tires of trying to understand, and master its subtle and intriguing challenges. |
