Lake Lackawana - Good Starter Course, Aug 13, 2010

As a beginner golfer, I thought this course was a great introduction to the game, but also challenging enough for players with more experience. It is not so overcrowded that you feel rushed. It's a comfortable environment, and I enjoyed playing my first game there. I will definitely go back again.

It's always fun to come back here and play. It was one of the courses my grandfather brought me to, to learn. None of the par 4's are the length of even some long par 3's, but when you come to this course, you really dont care. The most interesting hole is number 8, nearly 200 yards on a 100 yard incline. That's wild.

Oakmont Country Club
"Tough but Fair"
Oakmont is a picturesque layout in the foothills of Glendale with lovely mountain views. The course is an old-style country club layout which rewards well planned out shotmaking. The greens are usually very fast and reward players for being below the hole. The Pac-10 Conference Championship was held at Oakmont in 2003 and only two players broke par (288) in a field of 50. The players found the par 3's particularly challenging. The greens are very well protected with sand bunkers and the fairways are heavily tree-lined. Best time to play Oakmont is in the spring and fall. I find the twelfth hole to be the most challenging. It is a 420 yard par four, uphill and terraced. The green is long and narrow, two-tiered and protected by a large bunker on the right and a drop-off hill and trees on the left.

Evergreen Country Club - Private Course
"A course unto yourself."
I have become a big fan of Evergreen's private course. From beginning to end, you feel like your the only person on the course. This course offers secluded fairways and some very challenging holes. While the 14th is the signature hole, the 7th offers a close second. With the big tree in the middle of the fairway before the bend. Making it a difficult hole to play. The course could stand a little over all care, it's still a blast to play.

Quarry, The
"Golf Heaven"
This wonderful Tom Fazio design offers a truly great experience. It can only be played with a member. Don't worry about a starting time or slow play, the members are rare. I've been told that if you can find a weed in any fairway, they will give you a membership! ($175,000/player plus dues) Every hole has it's own personality and most (10) involve water. A desert design that requires accuracy off the tee, and a back nine into an old quarry up in the mountains, the course is very challenging, but has incredible views of Indio (All putts break that way.) Chances are that you won't get the opportunity to play this track, but if you do, don't miss it!
