.Best kept golf secret !, Mar 26, 2004
reviewer: John S. from Pittsburgh,Pa.
My foursome played seventy-two holes At Alpine last summer. We were staying at nearby Deep Creek and it was my duty to choose the golf courses to play during the week. I surfed the web for golf courses in the area and Alpine was one of four listed. While driving to the course the first day, my expectations were not high due to the websites' description of the course, the low green fees, and the total yardage. I had no idea of what lay ahead. I was nervous, we were on vacation and I wanted my partners to enjoy our golf. As we approached the guard shack, the lower holes came into view and my uneasiness started to subside quickly. The nearby greens looked to be in very good condition and the course was well manicured with the fairways and the two cuts of rough very distinguishable. The course appeared promising and the early comments from the others were favorable. When you arrive at the top of that winding entrance road and turn into the hotel parking lot and clear the tree line, there lies a view of that huge blue lake below and the distant mountains that is awesome. Back to golf..... The first hole, the shortest par 4 at only 280 yards, is fronted by large undulating mounds preventing a roll-on and to the rear, trees and out of bounds for those who want to drive it. After that what is there not to like? We found; - Green size relative to hole distance - Greens putting surface very good - Most holes have rolling fairways which offer variable lies - Par 3's as challenging as any others - A 609 yard par 5 which doglegs to the right at the drive landing area, about 270 yards out, and then continues gradually uphill to an elevated green protected by a pond upfront. There are no shortcuts here off the tee unless you like the prospects of lost balls and rattlesnakes. - No two par 4's are alike - No waiting! My favorite hole was #11, a par 5. The lake lies between the fairway and the tee which is nearly perpendicular to the fairway. You cut off as much of the lake with your drive as you dare. The fairway then runs parallel to the lake and is fairly flat with subtle rolling mounds which could leave you with a slight sidehill lie. I left myself with a three iron for my second shot each time. I hit the green two of three times and ended up with three eagles. Nice hole. We nearly had the course to ourselves. We enjoyed the course and it's conditioning so much that we played our golf at Alpine Lake three of our four allotted golf days. Midway through our first round I was in the pro shop when an older fellow walked in to pay greenfees for his foursome, as he did, he turned to me and said, "you have found the best kept golf secret in the tri-state area". I think he is right.
