Raceway Special, May 20, 2005

I play at the Raceway every year when I go home for vacation. And every time I go back, there are marked improvements on the course. The best thing about Raceway is their "Raceway Special": greens fees, cart and lunch for about 30 bucks! I plan on golfing there a few times at least this summer, so I apologize for the divots in advance.

Raceway is a fairly easy track, good for the higher-handicap golfer. Consistently in good condition, always enjoyable. Nice variety of holes.

I have been playing this course for 20 years and the course is so improved and impeccable the last time I played which was last August, full irragation and watering systems that have been in full use for about 5 years now have greatly improved the play also paved cart paths and new and completely changed layouts are a real challenge. I and my friends always enjoy a day at the Raceway, it ends with a great meal in the Raceway Restaurant with abundant plates for your dollar and great food choices. Priced right, can't beat it.

Carolina Golf & Country Club
"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. The course can frustrate you if you expect too much too easily. This is what makes it such a wonderful place to experience the brilliance of Donald Ross. Classic course. Elevation changes make the course play longer than the yardage. Fast smooth greens can be treacherous. A nice variety of shots is required.

A great course with old world charm with a hint of Caddy Shack's great old golf course "Bushwood." You will be treated well and feel like you are on the Caddy Shack set. Not because the people, but because you would swear you where actually there. It really looks like it!! Here's to the Village of Glencoe for doing it right. Well done.

Cedar Creek Golf Club
"A course of challenge and beauty"
If you are looking for a track that will provide you the challenges of all the natural elements of the game of golf, Cedar Creek will do that. With it's bunkers, woods, length, rolling greens, water hazzards and blind shots. I have played this course at least a dozen times and I cannot a remember a time where I felt like I was being pushed by a group behind me or that I had to push a group ahead of me. It is easy to get frustrated with the challenge of the course, but you can maintain a good rhythem because of the pace of play. This track is also affordable. I have played many of the courses in Aiken County including the private courses and I haven't found any difference in the quality of this course compared to the private clubs. The staff are also very friendly.
