This course, which sits on a pristine site outside of Williamsburg, is a mountain-style course carved from hardwoods and an understory of holly and mountain laurel. It features seventy-foot elevation changes, large-scale bunkers, spring-fed creeks and deep-cut ravines. The fairways were carved out of valleys, and the greens sit atop greens and cliffs. At every turn, golfers will be faced with an array of options, some manageable, some overwhelming. A formidable challenge is hole #17, a 172-yard, par 3, which plays from one high spot to another with trouble lurking on both sides of the deep green. The final hole is a great driving hole with the green set perilously on a steep ledge. "Golf Digest" selected this course as the "Best New Upscale Course" for 1996, and they also rated it as the 3rd "Best in State" course for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" selected the course 14th in the 1998 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." "GOLFWEEK" selected it 31st in the category of "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1998 and 77th in 1999. Golfers may walk the course, however it is not recommended due to the constantly changing terrain.

|I played Stonehouse in September of '03 and thoroughly enjoyed the round. While looking intimidating from some of the tees, there is sufficient landing room for your tee shot. It's a very hilly (not for walkers) and picturesque course, demanding accuracy on the par 3's and requiring an accurate carry over a ravine on a number of the holes (not for the faint of heart). Am looking forward to playing it again!|
