Trona Golf Course

This nine hole course is very unique in that non-members may play all day for a minimal fee. There is no one operating the pro shop. Golfers are trusted to pay the green fees on the honor system. The greens are small in comparison to other courses. There is no grass on the fairways. Golfers are allowed to tee up fairway shots, and they are also permitted to bring grass mats to save wear and tear on their clubs. The course is maintained strictly by volunteers. Originally this desert course was developed as a recreational outlet for company workers who lived and worked in the town. The greens were once sand mixed with oil, but in 1981 they converted to grass by sodding to protect the environment. There is an additional set of tees that can be used when playing an eighteen hole round.

The original Trona golf course, in the 1960's, was across the Trona Railroad tracks beyond the end of Lupine Street. The greens on this old golf course were sand mixed with oil. My grandparents lived on Argus Ave, near Lupine St in the Fairway Apartments, just across the Trona Railway tracks from the old golf course. I use to explore the old golf course when I visited them, as a child, in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Part of the course is now covered with a pile of coal used to power the Searles Valley Chemicals plant.

As a native of Trona I used to play the original dirt course, now covered by the new plant built in 1977-1978. The course at Valley Wells was built with hard work by volunteers with rakes and shovels in 1977. The course was placed next to a popular swimming and recreational area, since closed due to insurance and handicapped access restrictions. As a kid growing up in Trona this was a favorite hangout during the summer.

Trona Golf Course- a unique golfing experience for the seasoned golfer. Imagine trying to play out of a sand trap for the entire duration of the match... challenging, very challenging. Planning to play golf in the Phoenix/Tuscon area? The Trona Golf Course is the perfect place to become acclimated to the dry heat of the desert. If you can play here, you can play anywhere!!!
