Nice enjoyable place to play 18 holes, Mar 09, 2004

Muni golf can be a hit or miss proposition to all who love to play the game but lack the resources to join a private club. Golf has never been an inexpensive pursuit, and it can be challenging to enjoy what can amount to a frustrating day of sacrificing balls to the "gods of golf". The benefit of lessons aside, Trumbull's own municipal park, is another one of a number of CT public access facilities worth the price of admission. The design and layout offer a novice or experienced player quite a few different "looks" throughtout the 18 holes. Some blind shots into the greens, with elevation, make it seem like a lot longer carry than most would prefer. Anyone who plays according to USGA rules and scores in the 70's here, can truly golf their ball.

Tashua has recently been given a facelift, and is a good place to play on a tourney-class course. It's pretty hilly, so if you're not used to walking, a cart is recommended. The front 9 is challenging, and the back 9 are truly a piece of work. Difficulty is comperable to Laurel View in Hamden, but with less water. Unfortunately, Tashua is somewhat expensive to play at if you aren't a Trumbull resident.

"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. Sand Ridge Golf Club
"Best of Ohio"
Sand Ridge is one of the best golf courses in the country. Even though greens are not all that fast they are always in perfect condition at all times of the year and the fairways are some of the best i have ever played from. The caddie program has some of the best and friendliest caddies in the nation.

Winter Springs Golf Club
"Winter Springs Wetlands"
This course is challenging because your lie had better be in the fairway or you'll most likely be looking for it in some form of casual water or very thick rough. The fairways were either overly-tight, negelected, outright wet, or all three. The greens are a muddy, slow-medium to slow speed with only a fair amount of undulation. The par 3 greens are almost all too large and too flat to be much fun. I've played WPGC twice and didn't really enjoy the experience because of all the standing water in the rough and on the fairways. I'm rating the course at 2 stars only because they have reliable and frequent refreshment cart service.
