This resort, which was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1998 list of "Silver Medal Resorts," features two outstanding eighteen hole courses. Both are desert-style, target courses. The Mountain Course has many changes in elevation and several elevated tees. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 7th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. "GOLF Magazine" selected it 44th best under the 1998 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." The Canyon Course is more level, but no less difficult. "Golf Digest" rated this as the 19th "Best in State" course for 1995-96. Putting on either course is a challenge because the greens are undulating. The public is allowed to play the Mountain Course on even days of the month, and the Canyon Course on the odd days. These courses were the site of the Pro-Am tournament for the PGA and LPGA Tour's Tucson Open. The finals for The Merrill Lynch Shoot Out were also held here. Both courses have ladies' course and slope ratings from the men's tees.

simply great, Mar 12, 2007

Just got back to the cold from a week of golf in the Tucson area. Had the pleasure of playing Ventana Canyon Mountain Course while I was there. This Fazio design is simply great with very true greens and some brutal hazards. Small pot bunkers can kill your game quickly. Scenery around the course is great with hardly another visible hole. I would consider it a MUST PLAY.

I have stayed at Ventana (the Club) each year for the past 20 or so, and have travelled extensively playing golf all over the world. This Fazio course is a gem, when it is in top condition. Even when it is not at its best, the Course is among the best resort courses I have ever played. (Comparable to Bandon/Pacific Dunes, Castle Pines Ridge Course, Spyglass, Pasa Tiempo, Troon North). The property is phenominal (spelling?). From the very back tees, the course is brutal, but beautiful beyond description. Thousands of Saugaro's, very few homes (unfortunately, not the zero that were there 20 years ago), long carries to fairways, but big greens, cut in and around fantastic desert canyons and arroyo's. If you like desert golf....this place is a must.
