This well-maintained course was built on flat terrain and plays longer than it looks. Water hazards (lakes) come into play on a couple of holes, plus numerous trees can alter your shots.

Challenging and Straightforward Test, Sep 25, 2006

| I played Squaw Creek for the first time on 9/24/06, and enjoyed every minute of it. The clubhouse and practice facilities are fantastic. As for the course, it is nicely maintained, with bunkers coming into play on almost every shot, and water in play on a few holes. Trees line most fairways, so you have to be under control off the tee. The recently-aerified greens were a little slower than usual (or so I was told), but they were still fairly quick.
My favorite aspect of the course was the numerous slight doglegs, with trees dictating the line of play off the tee. Even though there were a few blind tee shots, with the GPS system in the carts I was at no disadvantage to those who had been there before.
Overall, the course was straightforward, challenging and fair. I appreciated the lack of gimmicks or tricked-up greens.
The course's only weakness may be its 18th hole, a par-3 9-iron or wedge shot over a pond. It's a nice-looking hole, but not one you'd normally expect at the finish. |
