This very hilly course has narrow fairways. The medium-sized greens are undulating, fast, and most are well-bunkered. There are water hazards that come into play on a few holes. A. W. Tillinghast redesigned this course in 1917, followed by William and David Gordon in 1955.

If you're interested in playing greens that are "over the top" this is your place. The greens on this course are ridiculous. The course is simply not enjoyable because of it. I have no intention to return to this course.

A tast of history, Dec 28, 2007

This is a great course with balance. The par fours vary in lenght and design; the par fives are reachable for long hitters and can be very difficult at times; and the par threes are without compare. The hills, on which the course is built, makes for some interesting views and even more interesting putts. The one negative is the odd second hole.

Fun & Challenging, Jul 23, 2007
reviewer: Shawn from Ephrata, PA
I have played here twice now. It has a variety of different types of holes. Greens were medium-fast to fast the two times I was there. You don't get many flat lies on the fairways either which makes a bit more challenging. Par 3's are not pushover holes either. #4 is 170 yds downhill and the green is protected by a stream that guards the front and right sides. Woods right behind it and a road to the left. #13 is the 135-yard moat hole. This hole has 4 foot fringe rough area and then it's all downhill to the 10-foot-wide moat all around. # 10 is about 135 yards downhill and has a stream about 20 yards in front of the green. #17 is 170 yards uphill. There are some holes that are blind such as the 2nd and 18th holes. Trees are in play all over as well. The course could use some upkeep. Just three water coolers on the course and they are all at one cart path intersection after the 6th hole where the 6th, 7th, and 17th meet. Some ball washers are bone dry. Overall it is a beautiful course with greens in great shape. I give it a 7 out of 10 for the area.

It's fun, Feb 10, 2007

I was a member of Galen Hall in 2004 and it was always enjoyable. I played it again in December 2006 and didn't notice any maintenance problems. A couple of the greens were always been a little spotty (#2 3 and 4) but not bad. I'm not sure what fairway was "all dirt", possibly it was just being aerated. This course starts and ends little goofy, with a bizarre par-5 second hole straight up a a hill, then down over a public road, then 150-foot drop to the green. 18 is basically the same hole but in reverse. Both should move the tee up and play as par-4. Third hole also plays across a public road. But in general, every hole is pleasant in it's own way, none of the holes look much alike, every green complex is difficult, usually domed with close bunkers and fast greens and the conditions are usually good enough to play summer rules if you really want to, although the members do roll it in the fairways. The par-3's are all excellent.

Who Took The Fairways? Fore, Fore, Sep 08, 2005
reviewer: Major Flog from The Wormy Apple
I played (regretfully) the once magnificent Galen Hall CC on Friday Sept 2, 2005. It cost $30 with a cart. The course did not have one completely turfed fairway! One was entirely dirt. You had to hit your ball in the rough to find grass--and that was usually crab grass. Also, five of their greens were diseased. At no time, making the reservation by phone, or paying at the pro shop was a caveat mentioned regarding the appalling status of the course. I feel completely bilked by their management. At least I should have been warned. Berks Co. has too many other courses to waste time with this one. My advice: DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE FOR AT LEAST NINE MONTHS!!!!!!!! It is the worst conditioned course I have played in 39 years, and I've been on some real cow pastures.

Super Tough Greens, Sep 07, 2005

Great test of golf, a little short for modern standards, however the small very fast greens make this a true test.

Tillinghast for the masses., Aug 09, 2005

This is a solid old time course which could use a little TLC. The greens are generally small and there are some very severe slopes. The course is short enough to be vulnerable to a long hitter. This is a very reasonably priced course which can give you a taste of what golf was all about in the early 20th century.
