This links-style course was built on very flat terrain. The course is located alongside the ocean, and the ocean comes into play on two holes. The fairways are somewhat open, and the slightly sloped greens are well bunkered. In all, water hazards come into play on thirteen holes, and the wind is frequently a major factor. The signature hole is #18, a 436-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot up a dogleg left fairway and an approach shot to a natural amphitheater green.

Just my opinion, Feb 27, 2009 |

Several soggy holes especially the 7th. Wind is a major factor as is the frequent bad odor from the sewage plant adjacent to the course. Goose dropping can also be an issue. On weekends expect a 5 1/2 to 6 hour round. The course can backup especially on the 2nd hole. On the positive side the greens are some of the best in Suffolk county and the fairways are above average. The pro shop is well stocked the the personnel are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

You'll usually find the wind blowing at this flat muni near the Great South Bay. Maintenance of the greens was much improved in 2006. Course appearance was also improved by clearing brush from around the many water hazards. However, large parts of many fairways remained unplayable due to bare patches or chronic flooding. Geese droppings can be annoying. The adjacent sewage treatment plant blocks the view of the bay. There is an adequate driving range and putting green, but chipping is not allowed. The pro and his staff enforce the rules. Bring water because there is none on the course, and you don't want to drink from the cooler outside the proshop (yeh, it's been like that for years). The snack bar serves only bagels and rolls for breakfast, but the bar has a nice menu for after your round.

I have played this course 3 times. It is in good shape most of the time. Watch that just after a rain the water doesn't drain away all that fast. The course will stay wet for a couple of days. I really enjoyed playing here. Beware the winds that come off the bay, they can get very strong.

I played this course in late August and was amazed at the condition of the greens. They were in gorgeous shape and fast! The roll of the ball was as true as I have ever seen. If you read the slightest break, you got it. The fairways were also flawless. At a county golf course? Amazing!
