This tree-lined course is located in a beautiful setting on the top of a mountain. The course was built on undulating terrain and has water hazards that come into play on several holes. There are also sand bunkers spread throughout the course. This club was originally founded in 1887 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. In addition, it was recognized by "GOLF Magazine" in their 1995 list of "The First 100 Clubs in America." Charles Banks did the one of the original designs in 1930, followed by redesigns by A.W. Tillinghast and Frank Duane. Green fees for guests are billed to member's accounts; cart and green fees are not made available for publication. Guests must be accompanied by a member in order to play this course.

ECCC Thrills You!, Nov 03, 2005 |

Was fortunate enough to play here with a member. The course (in November) was in immaculate shape. The greens were airated a few weeks ago,but for the most part the greens still ran true. The course reminds me a bit of Upper Montclair, but I think maybe a tad more challenging (several blind shots over hills to well-bunkered greens). Wide fairways make you want to pull out driver, however, bunkers are extremely well placed. The day I played it was extremely windy, so it turned most of the 400+ par 4's into the wind into Par 5's, and #7 a 560 yarder played easily 650+ into the wind. Great course, beautifully manicured, friendly service.

Its just plain booty. And it be too dam hot to be golfing. Especially in the middle of a 500 yd hole. This place should be destroyed.

ECCC is a true classic! I never played it before 2004 so am unfamiliar with recent changes, however I think ECCC should be ranked up there with the best in the country let alone NJ. The Bunkering is spectacular, the greens have scale and undulation, the course has more than adequate length, but above all it has an indescribable feel. It is like stepping back in time, the roaring twenties. Jones, Von Elm, Cruickshanks, Hagen, all played here.

That's what noted golf writer Red Hoffman called Essex County Country Club many years ago. After a decade or so of mediocre conditioning, ECCC is now back on the list of NJ's best courses. A recent renovation by architect Gil Hanse has brought out the best and the beast of this old classic course. Where Tillinghast, Raynor and Banks created some of their better holes, Hanse has brought the course back to its original splendor, reshaping and restoring original bunkers, repositioning others, and getting rid of obtrusive growth of bushes, scrub pines, and out of place trees. The back nine is one of the best you will ever play.
