Francis Byrne Golf Course
1100 Pleasant Valley WayWest Orange, NJ 07052
Phone: (973)736-2306
This is a very demanding course. The tree-lined fairways are narrow, and the sloped greens are fast. There is one stream that comes into play on five holes. The signature hole is #15, a 442-yard, par 4, featuring a dogleg left fairway. If you want to reserve a tee time for the weekend, you need to come out in person to sign up, plus you must be a local or state resident. Out-of-state residents can play after noon on the weekends and anytime during the weekdays.

Great Public Course, Apr 23, 2010 |

| Just played this course today and is was in excellent condition for a public course, probably the best that I have played in the area. They have made a lot of really nice improvements recently that have made the course so much better than it was before. A definite challenge with quite a few long par fours and some nice hills. |

| I think the course is the best county course of the three that essex county has to offer. However on the weekends it can take well over 5 hours to play the round. |

The best public course., Jul 22, 2008 |

| One of the well maintained public golf courses and a fairly challenging course. The greens are really fast and the course is very picturesque. There is lot of people on the weekends and hence having a tee-time reservation will be very handy to avoid lengthy waiting. There is also good practise putting and chipping areas. The only disadvantage is that there is no driving range close-by so it takes couple of holes to warm up and there is only one par 5 hole. Friendly staff and reasonable price (much cheaper than the courses at Edison Counties). |

For Essex county not bad., Apr 14, 2008 |

| Well I don't know who can get on for twenty dollars or under. But walking without a county card you are paying near 40 or over. Tee boxes are hit or miss. Usually pretty chewed up though. Greens are pretty decent. Better to go on a weekday, weekend is kind of a jungle. But, like I said, play the other courses in essex county and this seems more like a private course. If you are used to semi-private, be prepared for disappointment. |

Good test of your golf game, Aug 20, 2005 |
| reviewer: Ted Straub

| This course is a fair test for the average golfer. There are no par real par fives on the course. The 1st hole is 460 and can be reached in two. It plays as a par five but is realy a long par four. If you want to play the course at its best play from the back tees. It is still under 6700 yards and the added distance from the back tees is negligible. The 15th hole is the toughest hole and NO Ben Hogan did not take a twelve on the hole. Mr. Hogan proclaimed it to be one of his favorite golf holes. The greens are very playable just play less break than you see. Overall maintainance is good and the course is in good shape considering all the play it gets but the county could return some of the greens fees to the course for improvements. CASH ONLY, no credit or debit cards. I always enjoy playing this course. |

Tough Course ... Good Exercise, Aug 15, 2005 |
| reviewer: Chris

| The lack of par 5's makes birdies tough to come by. Plenty of elevated greens, slopy fairways smallish greens. Being in the South Mountain area, the course has many several holes where you drive downhill; very picturesque. Hole 4: tee straight up maybe 30 feet and doglegs left. Hole 9: must be some 7 stories high. Hole 10: long drive with elevated green to the left. Lots of up and down... walk for a good exercise. |

good for a last-minute walk-up, Sep 03, 2004 |

| Unless you're an essex county resident this course can cause a few headaches to get on. The reservation system is quite confusing... I guess you have to be there in person... anyway, I have had success walking on at this course with short waits, even on sundays. |
