Brillant Layout and Scenery, Average Condition, Oct 04, 2006

| Layout is fabulous. Quirky. Shows you the way golf was meant to be played. Unfortunately, the condition of the course does not match the brilliance of the layout. Great Holes (hole number in *#* form):
*1*. Par 4.Fairway narrows as the hole climbs uphill after a big decline. Short hole, but tricky green can easily make you 3-putt.
*3*. Par 3. Best hole on the golf course. Huge valley with many ridges in between the elevated tee and green. If not careful, you can run a putt right of the front of the green when putting from behind the hole.
*4*. Long, slight dogleg right par 4. Handicap #1 hole. Pond to right of green. The area around the green is so firm that you should putt even from 30 yards off the green whether your in rough or a bunker. Green looks easy but in reality can bite you.
*7*. Par 4 that drops way downhill, then quickly climbs all the way back up. Bling approach shot is challeging. You have to ring a bell after you're finished to let the group behind know that they can come up.
*8*. Severe dogleg left par 4. Beautiful pot bunker 20 yards short of green that collects a lot of balls. Hole goes way uphill from 100 yards and in. Looks like a hole from England. The 2nd most aesthetically pleasing hole on the golf course.
*10*. Dead straight, flat, wide open, long par 4. The green is treacherous, though. Probably decreases 10 feet in elevation from back to front. Uphill putts very slow; downhill putts ... good luck.
*12*. The most beautiful hole I have ever played. Green and rough blend into the bay beyond the hole, as though the hole was part of nature itself. The beauty alone makes this par 3 the most enjoyable hole on the golf course.
*14*. Severe dogleg left par 4. Tee shot is very intimidating - you must place your shot in the right half of the fariway, but it slopes from right to left! Green has a friendly boundary.
*15*. Par 5 with all sorts of elevation changes. You can go for the green in two if you hit a good drive, but there's OB left and water right! Very tricky green that is easy to three-putt.
*16*. Par three that is parallel to #3, so they're mirror images ... almost. #16 is tricky to hit in one, but not nearly as tricky as #3. Tree on the left 30 yards in front of the green adds meaning to the hole, as well as making it more difficult. You won't see a lot of putts made on this green.
*18*. Seems like a easy finishing par 4. Downhill then uphill, short in length... no problem? Anecdote: 30 feet above hole in two, need to three-putt for an 89. First putt runs by hole and stops, 30 feet by, off the green. Next putt 5 feet by, tricky downhill 5-footer in! Almost blew it! The green that slopes from back to front is very, very quick.
Overall, the brilliance of this course lies in the drastic elevation changes and in the quirky greens. At first sight, it may appear to be a dump; but if you play it, be sure to oversome its ratty condition and examine the brilliance of Donald Ross' design. You may view Winnapaug in a much different light. |

Don't bother, Aug 03, 2004

| If Donald Ross came within ten miles of this place I'll eat my Big Bertha head cover. Betsy Ross maybe but not Donald. Fairways are horrible and the greens are worse. Tees are mostly dirt. Layout is boring. The place can get away with it because it caters to tourists who need a day away from ther beach and apparently don't care about quality.
In a word - itsadump! |
