Great course...bad management, Aug 15, 2004

Played Southport Springs on a Wednesday early afternoon, and was enjoying the course untill the 10th hole. I ended up with a rude 6-some behind me, and three more in front of me that had been let off the back nine. When I asked about this, I was told by an employee that they always let groupe off both nines. This is something that any well managed course would never allow. If the management matched the layout, this would be a good place to play.

Oakmont Country Club
"Tough but Fair"
Oakmont is a picturesque layout in the foothills of Glendale with lovely mountain views. The course is an old-style country club layout which rewards well planned out shotmaking. The greens are usually very fast and reward players for being below the hole. The Pac-10 Conference Championship was held at Oakmont in 2003 and only two players broke par (288) in a field of 50. The players found the par 3's particularly challenging. The greens are very well protected with sand bunkers and the fairways are heavily tree-lined. Best time to play Oakmont is in the spring and fall. I find the twelfth hole to be the most challenging. It is a 420 yard par four, uphill and terraced. The green is long and narrow, two-tiered and protected by a large bunker on the right and a drop-off hill and trees on the left.

Don't expect great things.. but if you just want to get in a quick 9 holes of knocking the ball around, this is cheap, convenient and fun. My girlfriend and I played on Sunday for $20 total.
